In the above seal, designed by the U.S. Navy, you will find in the background, the USS Langley (CV 1), the first retrofitted U.S. aircraft carrier. Flying above the Langley is a Vought VE-7. The center carrier is the USS Ranger (CV 4) with a Wildcat aircraft that was assigned to the Ranger. In the foreground, is the USS Gerald R Ford (CVN-78) with and F-35C flying above. On the deck, you will find a complement of fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft including the H-60, F-18, E-2D, F-35 and MQ-25. The seal is framed with 100 stars. (U.S. Navy courtesy image)

In 2022, the U.S. Navy will celebrate a century of the aircraft carriers and personnel that have formed the most powerful at-sea platform for force projection and diplomacy that the world has ever seen.

When the aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV 1) was commissioned in March 1922, it marked the birth of a new type of seaborne weapon, one that had much to do with making the U.S. Navy a dominant naval power. From Langley and its humble beginnings as a converted collier, to today’s USS Gerald R Ford (CVN-78) representing the most advanced war-fighting platform in the world, the American aircraft carrier has been the mainstay in executing the U.S. Navy’s mission of defending our nation and its interests around the globe.
